Abeokuta – Former Ogun Central Senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has made a dramatic return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely months after leaving the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iyabo, who joined the APC in January to pursue her governorship ambition in Ogun State, had openly criticised the PDP during her defection. In a widely reported interview, she described some PDP leaders as “idiots” for failing to engage influential party members.
According to her, the PDP only reached out to her when it needed support during elections.
> “I think they’re idiots, if you can put it that way. And I think they’re idiots because if elections are about people and if you don’t reach out to the people that are prominent in your party, how do you win elections? You can’t,” she said at the time.
Her move to the APC marked her return to active partisan politics after about 15 years away from the political scene.
However, the former Ogun State Commissioner for Health and renowned epidemiologist resigned from the APC last week after failing to secure the party’s governorship ticket. She accused the Ogun APC leadership of treating her with disrespect and sidelining her aspirations.
In a surprising twist, Iyabo on Monday appeared at the official unveiling of the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate, Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.
Her arrival sparked jubilation among party faithful, who welcomed her with chants, songs, and loud cheers. Supporters crowded around the former senator as she acknowledged the enthusiastic reception.
Addressing party members briefly, Iyabo expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances in the next election and declared that the era of denying the party victory in Ogun State was over.
She also hinted that her formal re-entry into the PDP would be completed in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the PDP announced Senator Iyabo Obasanjo as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District ahead of the forthcoming elections, signalling a fresh political chapter in her career despite her earlier criticism of the party.
