Nigeria’s entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and academic, Dr. Kola Oyewo.
His son, Dr. Wale Oyewo, confirmed the sad development on Friday evening, disclosing that the respected thespian passed away at the age of 80.
Dr. Oyewo was widely celebrated as one of the most influential figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian performing arts, with a distinguished career spanning over six decades.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, he began his acting career in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and rose to prominence through his iconic portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame.
Beyond the stage, he featured in several acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and numerous Yoruba-language films that helped shape Nigeria’s movie industry.
A respected scholar, Dr. Oyewo earned a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University, mentoring generations of actors and theatre practitioners.
His passing comes only months after the celebration of his 80th birthday, during which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to him, describing him as a national treasure and an outstanding ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.
