The Ogun State House of Assembly witnessed significant developments during its recent plenary, marked by a high-profile political defection and solemn condolences for a tragic accident.

In a formal communication read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, the former Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Atobatele of Abeokuta South Constituency One, announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Atobatele cited “internal crises, leadership disputes, and a lack of clear direction” within the PDP at both state and national levels as his primary reasons for leaving.

In his letter, the lawmaker stated his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by the interest of his constituents, aiming to secure a “stable and progressive political platform” for them. He expressed belief that joining the APC would enable more effective collaboration with the government to advance the development agenda for his constituency.

Responding, Speaker Elemide acknowledged the decision, expressing hope that the lawmaker’s new political affiliation would justify his move. He reiterated that despite party differences, the Assembly remains a united legislative family.

In a separate, somber moment, the House commiserated with British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua and the families of victims of a fatal accident along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The incident, which occurred at the Makun junction, claimed the lives of Joshua’s cousin, Sina Ghami, and a friend, Latif Ayodele.

The matter was brought to the floor by Honourables Ademola Adeniran and Damilare Bello, representing Sagamu constituencies. The Assembly observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and wished the injured boxer and other survivors a speedy recovery.

The Speaker used the opportunity to admonish motorists to exercise caution on highways to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

Concluding the session, Rt. Hon. Elemide commended lawmakers for the spirit of unity and cooperation displayed throughout the year and thanked the Assembly’s management and staff for their support.
