ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the allegations contained in the resignation letter of former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, insisting that she was treated fairly and given the same opportunities as every other aspirant during her brief membership of the party.

Senator Obasanjo, who resigned from the APC in a letter dated May 31, 2026, cited alleged disrespect, intimidation of her supporters and other grievances as reasons for leaving the party.

Reacting in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ogun APC Publicity Secretary, Comrade Femi Nuberu, said the party remains committed to democratic principles and respects the right of every member to freely choose a political platform.

Nuberu recalled that Obasanjo joined the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) only a few weeks before the commencement of the governorship primary election and was accorded the same rights, privileges and opportunities available to all aspirants.

According to him, the party ensured a level playing field throughout the process, which eventually produced a consensus candidate. He noted that Obasanjo had publicly acknowledged the consensus arrangement and pledged her support in the interest of party unity, inclusiveness and the aspiration of a section of the state that had yet to produce a governor.

The APC spokesman described several claims in the former senator’s resignation letter as inconsistent with the reality of her experience in the party, maintaining that the process was transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination or intimidation.

The party further argued that Obasanjo’s decision to leave the APC barely weeks after joining it reinforced the perception that her membership was primarily linked to her pursuit of the governorship ticket rather than a long-term commitment to the party’s ideals and objectives.

“It is difficult to justify allegations of exclusion, intimidation or unfair treatment when she was accorded all the rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant,” the statement said.

The APC also pointed out that several prominent leaders and aspirants who did not secure their desired outcomes in the party’s internal contests had remained loyal and continued to support its growth and electoral success.

According to the party, politics is built on loyalty, patience, sacrifice and commitment to collective ideals rather than personal ambition. It noted that democratic contests naturally produce winners and losers, but genuine party members remain committed to the larger cause regardless of individual outcomes.

The party also questioned the timing of Obasanjo’s resignation, noting that some aspects of the governorship primary process were still ongoing when she tendered her resignation.

While reaffirming its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and the continued growth of the APC in Ogun State, the party wished the former senator well in her future political endeavours.

The statement was signed by Comrade Femi Nuberu, Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ogun State.
