ABEOKUTA – The Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), Ogun State Chapter, has partnered with VisionSpring, a non-governmental organisation, to provide free eye screening and subsidised prescription glasses for commercial motorcycle riders across the state as part of efforts to improve members’ welfare and enhance road safety.

The first phase of the health outreach commenced on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the association’s state secretariat in Abeokuta, where hundreds of riders underwent comprehensive eye examinations to assess their vision. Participants diagnosed with visual impairments were provided with appropriate treatment and recommended prescription glasses at highly subsidised rates.

The programme, which will be implemented in phases across Ogun State, is designed to ensure that more AMORAN members benefit from quality eye care services.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of AMORAN in Ogun State, Otunba Taofeek Sokoya, popularly known as Danku, described the initiative as another demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the health and welfare of members.

According to him, good eyesight is essential for commercial motorcycle operators, as it directly impacts their safety, that of their passengers, and other road users.

“This initiative is born out of our unwavering commitment to the welfare of our members. Healthy vision is not a luxury for commercial riders; it is a necessity. We want every AMORAN member to have access to quality eye care so they can carry out their daily activities safely and efficiently.”

Sokoya commended VisionSpring for partnering with the Union to improve the health of commercial riders, adding that the programme would be extended to other parts of the state to ensure wider participation.

“This is only the first phase. We are taking this programme across the state because we want every member, irrespective of location, to benefit. Our administration will continue to prioritise initiatives that improve the lives and wellbeing of our members.”

Also speaking, a VisionSpring official, Mr. Akanni Adedeji, said the organisation remains committed to promoting eye health among commercial transport operators, noting that many people are unaware of vision problems until they begin to affect their daily activities.

“Good eyesight is indispensable for anyone involved in transportation. Through this initiative, we are helping riders understand the condition of their eyes and providing the necessary intervention to improve their vision. Those requiring further medical attention will also be referred to appropriate health facilities.”

Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the leadership of AMORAN and VisionSpring for bringing the programme to commercial riders.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Oluwaseun Ajayi, described the outreach as timely and impactful.

“This is one of the best welfare programmes organised for riders. Many of us have neglected our eye health because of the cost involved. Today, we received professional eye examinations and necessary assistance. We sincerely appreciate our chairman and VisionSpring for this thoughtful initiative.”

Another beneficiary, Mr. Adekunle Bamidele, said the programme had restored hope to many riders.

“I had been experiencing blurry vision for some time but couldn’t afford proper treatment. This programme has given me access to quality eye care. I commend Otunba Taofeek Sokoya and his executive for always putting members first.”

The free eye care initiative is expected to continue in successive phases, reaching AMORAN members across all local government areas of Ogun State as part of the association’s sustained commitment to promoting members’ health, welfare, and safer roads.
