Staffers of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) have been advised to embrace routine medical checkups to forestall future medical emergencies.
Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, gave the advice during a medical outreach organised by OGSIEC for its members of staff at the Commission’s headquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
Osibodu encouraged the staffers to take their health more seriously and utilise the health insurance scheme introduced by the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration in the State, “a lot of illnesses are preventable. Check your blood sugar and blood pressure every day. You can walk up to any pharmaceutical store to check your blood pressure free of charge. Go for a routine check at least twice a year.
“The State government has made healthcare services in the State cheaper and more accessible to all residents through the introduction of the Health Insurance Scheme, which is very laudable,” he said.
A Consultant, Family Physician and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, State Hospital, Ijaye, Dr. Samuel Olulope, said illnesses do not just start suddenly; it is always an accumulation of untreated little ailments. He therefore urged all staff to be deliberate in their healthcare routine check, by taking note of any changes in their body, urging them to always drink lots of water and shun self-medication.
Speaking, Director Nursing Services, Hospitals Management Board, Mrs. Oluremi Mosuro, enjoined all staff to be intentional about their health, saying “a larger percentage of those screened today were at high risk of developing high blood pressure, which, if not properly managed, could lead to other related health issues”.
“With the introduction of the State Health Insurance, people can now go for regular medical checkups, at practically no cost, at least every three months, to monitor what is settling up in their body system and how it can be effectively managed”.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary, OGSIEC, Mr. Suraj Abdul said, “Ignorance is the most deadly disease, as many were with various ailments without being aware. ”This is why the Commission is organising this exercise, to ensure every member of staff is in good health to enable them to perform their jobs effectively”.
The Director, Administration and Supplies, Mr. Adebola Awoyemi, appreciated the management team, especially the Permanent Secretary, for his proactive approach, dedication and commitment to staff welfare.
The highlight of the event was the distribution of OGSHIS cards to members of staff and the capturing of those who missed the earlier registration.
