Governor Dapo Abiodun has declared Ogun State ready to host the best-ever National Sports Festival, as he inspected the ongoing facility upgrades at the MKO Abiola Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta.
During the tour, Governor Abiodun expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction, highlighting the near completion of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and a handball court at the MKO Abiola Stadium. He also noted the advanced stage of completion at the Alake Sports Centre.

“I am confident that we are well prepared to host Nigerian youths. We are adequately positioned to host the best National Sports Festival in the history of the games,” Governor Abiodun stated.

The governor revealed that the extensive renovation of sports facilities has already yielded significant benefits, with the African Athletics Federation selecting Ogun State to host the Africa Under-20 Athletics Competition in 2026.

“This will be one of the legacies of our administration,” he said, emphasizing the international recognition resulting from the state’s investment in sports infrastructure.
To ensure the MKO Abiola Stadium remains dedicated to sporting activities, the government is constructing a separate pavilion for non-sporting events such as rallies and celebrations. Governor Abiodun also announced plans to rename the stadium as the MKO Abiola Sporting Complex.

Anticipating an influx of 15,000 attendees for the National Sports Festival, the governor highlighted the economic benefits for the state, including increased tourism at sites like Olumo Rock. He also emphasized the festival’s role in discovering new sporting talents.

“The economic impact of this festival on the economy of this state can best be imagined; the multiplier effect will be felt more after the games,” he said.

Governor Abiodun asserted that Ogun State’s investment in sporting facilities is unparalleled in the country, setting a new standard for national sporting events.
