The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, has called for intensified collaboration between the public and private sectors to combat rising cybersecurity threats in Nigeria.

Speaking at a 3-day retreat for the Senate Committee on National Security and House Committee on Digital Communication organised by the Council of Europe in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, Senator Salisu, who also chairs the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, emphasized the importance of a unified approach in addressing the growing dangers posed by cyberattacks.

He acknowledged that while the Nigerian government has made strides in improving the country’s cyber infrastructure, the rapidly evolving nature of threats necessitates constant vigilance and innovation. “Cybersecurity is not just a government responsibility. It requires cooperation from every sector, especially private companies that hold vast amounts of data,” Salisu stated.

The senator expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals, who are continuously adapting to technological advancements. He noted that the country’s economic growth could be hampered if urgent steps are not taken to protect critical data and infrastructure.

“The implications of cyberattacks can no longer be ignored. If we are serious about building a technology-driven economy, then our cyber defences must be top-notch,” Salisu added.

Addressing the digital economy, Senator Salisu highlighted the need for the government to focus on strengthening ICT policies to attract foreign investment and spur local innovation. According to him, the future of Nigeria’s economy lies in the technology sector, and with the right legislative backing, the country can become a global leader in tech development.

“The future of work, education, and business is all about technology. We must position ourselves to tap into that potential, not just by passing laws but by creating an enabling environment where innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive,” he said.

The senator further assured Nigerians that the committee he leads is committed to pushing for laws and policies that will safeguard the country’s digital space while promoting the growth of the tech sector. He revealed that discussions are already underway with stakeholders to draft a comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy that addresses both current and future challenges.

As Nigeria continues to embrace digital transformation, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. Senator Salisu’s call for collaboration comes at a time when businesses and individuals are increasingly reliant on technology, and the potential fallout from cyber threats poses significant risks to the nation’s economy and security.
