Abuja – The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The government said June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.
According to the Minister, the Federal Government remains committed to upholding democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to preserving and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, noting that these ideals are critical to national development and stability.
He also stated that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to enhance internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.
The Minister stressed that a secure and peaceful environment is essential for the sustenance of democracy and socio-economic growth.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion for civic reflection and renewed commitment to national unity, responsible citizenship and lawful conduct.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in recognition of the country’s democratic struggle and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists in the quest for democratic rule.
