Abeokuta – The Ogun State Government has announced that the 2026 Democracy Day celebration scheduled for June 12 will be observed in a special and reflective manner, with previously planned activities no longer holding in their original format.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the government said the decision was taken after careful consideration of prevailing national circumstances and the need for collective responsibility and sensitivity.
According to the statement, while June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a symbol of the people’s commitment to democratic governance, the state government considers it appropriate to mark the occasion in a more solemn and restrained manner.
The government noted that the observance would provide an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the gains of democracy, honour the sacrifices of democracy heroes, and renew their commitment to supporting good governance, peace, and sustainable development.
The state government also expressed appreciation to public servants, stakeholders, development partners, and residents for their understanding and cooperation.
It further thanked the people of Ogun State for their continued support and dedication to the unity, progress, and prosperity of the state.
The statement was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi.
