The Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 20 Kano State athletes in a fatal road crash while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), Gateway Games 2024, held in Ogun State.

The accident, which occurred about 50 kilometres from Kano after the contingent passed through Kaduna, has sent shockwaves across the nation. The victims were part of the Kano State delegation returning home after representing their state at the sporting event.

In a condolence statement signed by its Chairman, Otunba Taofeek Sokoya, AMORAN joined Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun (CON), in mourning the deceased, describing them as “talented, patriotic, and full of promise.”

“The untimely demise of these young athletes is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and a collective loss to Nigeria,” the statement read. “We stand in solidarity with their families, teammates, and the entire sporting community during this difficult time.”

AMORAN prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, asking Allah (SWT) to grant them Aljannah Firdaus and give their loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

The association also extended condolences to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Kano State Sports Commission, and the people of Kano, urging increased road safety awareness to prevent future tragedies.

“As an association committed to responsible riding, we share in the nation’s grief and call for greater vigilance on our roads,” Sokoya stated.

The tragic incident has drawn nationwide tributes, with many describing the athletes as heroes whose legacies in Nigerian sports will not be forgotten.
