Abuja – The Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON) has firmly distanced itself from ongoing political alignments and coalition moves ahead of the 2027 general elections. The association has also issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use of its name in any political activities.
This clarification was contained in a press statement personally signed by the National President of ASELGON, Hon. Albert Asipa, and made available to journalists in Abuja on Monday. Hon. Asipa, a former Executive Chairman of Imeko/Afon Local Government Area in Ogun State, emphasized that ASELGON is a non-partisan body comprising members from various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), among others.
He stated that it would be inappropriate for any individual or political party to claim ownership of the association or involve it in partisan activities. “ASELGON is a conglomerate of political parties, and it would be preposterous for anybody or party to lay claim to the association as its own,” Hon. Asipa said.
The National President urged members of the association, particularly state chairmen, to remain vigilant amid reports that some individuals are falsely parading themselves as ASELGON members to participate in ongoing political alignments. “I have been inundated with several phone calls regarding the alleged involvement of ASELGON in political developments. I consider it imperative to categorically state that our association is not, and cannot be, part of such activities. I also call on those dragging our noble association into these alignments to desist immediately,” he added.
Hon. Asipa reiterated the need for members to protect the integrity of ASELGON, stressing that the efforts invested in building the association over the past decade must not be undermined by desperate politicians. “It is a reality that our association cannot be pushed aside in the political affairs of this country, given our experience in serving the people. However, we must not fall for the antics of selfish politicians and lose our focus,” he noted.
He further emphasized that ASELGON remains committed to its core objectives, including grassroots development, mentoring the younger generation, and advocating for local government autonomy, which it views as essential for national development. “ASELGON is not for sale. Our mission is to contribute to the development of the grassroots, share our experience, and advocate for local government autonomy as a catalyst for even development across the country,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Hon. Asipa revealed that the association’s forthcoming National Convention, scheduled to hold in Jos, Plateau State, would provide a platform to further advance its cause. “Having paid our dues in the emancipation of people at the grassroots, we will not relent in our efforts. The Jos convention will offer a unique opportunity to reinforce our commitment to these goals,” he said.
ASELGON’s statement comes amid increasing political realignments across the country as the 2027 general elections draw closer. The association has vowed to remain focused on its non-partisan mission while continuing to advocate for the interests of local governments and grassroots communities.
