ABEOKUTA – The management of the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone (FTZ) has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations that some of its security personnel assaulted journalists during an official assignment in Ogun State.
The decision was conveyed in a letter dated June 5, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, and signed by the Chief Coordinator of the Zone, Dr. Abbey Onas.
In the letter, Dr. Onas condemned the alleged incident and assured the union that the matter would be thoroughly investigated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
He stated that any action capable of undermining the cordial relationship between the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone and its stakeholders was unacceptable and inconsistent with the values and operational standards of the organisation.
According to him, management has already commenced an internal investigation into the matter and will communicate the outcome of its findings, including any disciplinary or corrective measures taken, to the NUJ upon completion of the exercise.
Dr. Onas further assured that appropriate steps would be implemented to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
The Chief Coordinator appealed to the NUJ and other concerned parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions while the investigation remains ongoing, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability within the Free Trade Zone.
He noted that the Zone’s reputation as a secure and business-friendly destination for investors must be protected and strengthened through responsible engagement and adherence to due process.
Expressing confidence in an amicable resolution of the matter, Dr. Onas thanked the leadership of the NUJ for bringing the allegations to the attention of management and acknowledged the longstanding cordial relationship between the journalists’ union and the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone.
The investigation comes amid concerns raised by the NUJ over the alleged assault of journalists by security personnel within the Zone during the course of their official duties. Management has pledged transparency in handling the matter and ensuring accountability where necessary.
