The Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, has described the groundbreaking ceremony for the Abbott and Afrimedicals Manufacturing Facility as a major milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare development and a significant step towards achieving local diagnostic self-reliance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Talabi said the project represents more than the construction of a new facility, noting that it marks the beginning of a transformative era in the country’s healthcare sector.
According to him, access to accurate and timely diagnostics remains fundamental to an effective healthcare system, and the establishment of the manufacturing facility will help bridge critical gaps in healthcare delivery while reducing dependence on imported diagnostic products.
“The groundbreaking of this joint manufacturing facility between Abbott and Afrimedicals is not just the start of a building project; it is the beginning of a new era for local diagnostic self-reliance,” Talabi stated.
He noted that the local production of high-quality diagnostic test kits would not only improve healthcare outcomes but also reduce costs, increase accessibility, and empower citizens to take greater control of their health.
“By bringing the production of high-quality diagnostic test kits directly to our shores, we are doing more than manufacturing; we are saving lives, reducing costs, and ensuring that our people have the tools they need to manage their health right here at home,” he added.
The SSG commended Abbott and Afrimedicals for their collaboration, describing the partnership as a powerful example of what can be achieved when international expertise is combined with local innovation and commitment.
Talabi further praised the companies for their confidence in Nigeria’s potential, noting that the investment would create employment opportunities, stimulate innovation, and strengthen the nation’s medical infrastructure.
“This partnership is a testament to what we can achieve when global expertise meets local vision. The investment by Abbott and Afrimedicals demonstrates confidence in our future and will contribute significantly to job creation and healthcare advancement,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the facility would play a crucial role in improving healthcare delivery across the country and help build a more resilient health sector capable of meeting present and future challenges.
Talabi congratulated all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition and reaffirmed the commitment of the Ogun State Government to supporting initiatives that promote industrial growth, innovation, and improved healthcare outcomes.
The facility, when completed, is expected to boost local production of diagnostic test kits, strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare value chain, and contribute to the broader goal of ensuring quality healthcare is accessible to all citizens.
