ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed reports linking a recent security incident in the Mowe area of the state to banditry, describing the attack as an isolated criminal act.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the incident occurred at a private dredging site in Magbon Etido, Mowe, and was not connected to any bandit operation as alleged in some reports.
According to the police, a soldier attached to security duties at the site was killed during the attack, while another military personnel sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The command stated that following the incident, police operatives, working in collaboration with the military, immediately mobilized to the area and launched coordinated operations aimed at apprehending the responsible.
“Preliminary findings do not indicate any connection between the incident and banditry activities in Ogun State. Investigations and tactical operations remain ongoing,” the statement said.
The police assured residents that the situation had been brought under control, adding that security presence in the area had been strengthened to prevent any further breach of the peace.
The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
“The situation is under control, security presence has been reinforced, and there is no cause for alarm,” the police added.
The clarification comes amid reports circulating on social media claiming that suspected bandits had attacked and killed military personnel in the Mowe/Ibafo axis of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
Authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing and promised to keep the public informed of any significant developments.
