Abeokuta – The Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, has commended the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for its impactful collaboration in critical areas such as maternal mortality reduction, reproductive health services for undergraduates, and the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Speaking during a courtesy visit by a UNFPA delegation to the State, Talabi described the discussions as insightful and encouraging, noting that the partnership is yielding remarkable results that directly touch the lives of citizens.

“The focus on reducing maternal mortality especially heartens us—a cause we hold dear and consider a top priority,” Talabi said. “The provision of reproductive health services to undergraduates, along with the efforts to combat SGBV, speaks volumes about the commitment to the holistic well-being of our young people and our women.”

The SSG commended UNFPA for its dedication to training health workers, ensuring a consistent supply of family planning commodities, and establishing clinical labs for midwifery students—initiatives he described as foundational to building a resilient healthcare system.

He also highlighted the establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) as a crucial step for supporting survivors of SGBV, revealing that Ogun State has added three more centres of its own. He expressed excitement over innovative approaches, including engaging and rewarding young girls in technology-driven solutions to end violence.

According to Talabi, the State Government remains committed to building on the successes of the partnership, with a focus on adolescent health education, reproductive health training for students in higher institutions, and strengthening health systems.

“We look forward to continued collaboration, resource mobilisation, and the implementation of innovative strategies to improve the health and well-being of our people,” he said.

Talabi thanked UNFPA for its unwavering support and invaluable contributions, expressing confidence that together, the State and the agency can create a healthier, safer, and more prosperous future for all citizens of Ogun State.
