The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, for allegedly circulating false security information capable of causing panic among residents of the state.
The suspect, who operates on social media under the name “AK Philo,” was apprehended following an investigation into a viral post that carried the message, “Eket get ready for us,” alongside the image of an armed bandit.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the post sparked fear and widespread concern among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.
In a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, the police condemned the use of social media to spread unverified and provocative security-related messages, describing such actions as capable of creating unnecessary panic and disrupting public peace.
The command, however, reassured residents that there is no security threat in the state, stressing that the security situation in Akwa Ibom remains calm, stable and under control.
“The security situation across the state remains calm, stable and under control, while the police and other security agencies continue to maintain vigilance and deploy proactive measures to safeguard lives and property,” the statement said.
The police disclosed that investigations into the matter have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be charged to court in accordance with the law.
The command also revealed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals who may have collaborated in spreading the alleged false and inciting content.
DSP John warned members of the public against creating, publishing or sharing unverified security alerts, fake news and other misleading information, noting that such actions constitute criminal offences punishable under the law.
Residents were advised to verify security-related information through official channels and credible sources before sharing or acting on such reports.
The police further urged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding and to promptly report suspicious activities or genuine security concerns to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.
